German born Lena C. Emery grew up in Switzerland and Singapore, lived in Indonesia, Paris and later Berlin before moving to London in 2011.

Emery has cultivated a nuanced aesthetic that draws upon her itinerant background. Her photographs are both delicate as well as probing. Often permeated with Japanese influences, stemming from her extensive familiarity with Japanese culture and philosophies, her work is acutely poetic.

Emery’s photographs have been published in books by Gestalten, Rizzoli and Self Publish Be Happy. Institutions such as Parasol Unit Foundation for Contemporary Art and Annenberg Space of Photography have exhibited her work. Emery was nominated for the FOAM Paul Huf Award 2015 and was selected UK Winner by the Magenta Foundation within the Flash Forward Emerging Photographers 2016 Award. Her work has been featured in publications including The British Journal of Photography, WSJ Magazine and New York Times Style.

Emery’s first monograph Rie, published by Kominek and launched at Paris Photo in 2016, was selected as one of the most engaging & exciting projects in photography by the British Journal of Photography and featured on their January 2017 cover. The book opened a distinctly feminine dialogue on the act of revealing, reminding us that our bodies are bound to the natural world. Emery’s most recent books Yuka & The Forest and The Tree continue to examine the human form, while further reflecting on the disconnect between our natural environment and our modern cities.

Within the field of fashion, Emery has created thoughtfully curated imagery for Dior, Stella McCartney, Helmut Lang, Lemaire and Tiffany. Emery’s editorial commissions, characterised by their elegance, sensuality and imitation of narrative, include The Gentlewoman, M Le Magazine du Monde, Purple, Pop, British Vogue, W Magazine and System.

Emery has also directed films for Nowness as well as COS.
